Historic Saloon Car Racing

Pre January 1966 Saloon Car Racing.

Saloon Car Racing has been in existence for many years and certainly goes back to the fifties. Over the years, saloon (or touring car or sedan) racing has evolved into one of the main formulae of Motor sport.

The European Touring Car Championship in the early sixties, really put saloon car racing on the map. Whilst saying that the sights and sounds of the likes of Graham Hill, Tommy Sopwith and others driving Jaguars in National Saloon Car races in 1960, doubtless remain in the memories of those who witnessed them.

During the sixties, many major motor manufacturers entered saloon car races with works and quasi works cars as part of their marketing and sales strategy. Ordinary folks liked to see how real cars could perform on proper race tracks.

It was common place to see Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Jack Brabham and other premier drivers of the period jumping out of a formula car and into a Lotus Cortina, Alfa Romeo or whatever.

The pedigree of Saloon Car Racing is thus second to none in terms of established national and international competition, with the finest drivers at the world's most prestigious circuits.
